As a consumer of Cancer Research SA, you have specific rights and responsibilities regarding your care and treatment. As a patient of CRSA, you have the right to:

Access

  • Understand and use these rights. If for any reason you do not understand or you need help, the group must help.
  • Access Healthcare services and treatment that meets your needs.

Safety

  • Receive safe and high-quality healthcare that meets national standards. 
  • Be cared for in an environment that is safe and makes you feel safe.
  • Receive considerate and respectful care in a clean and safe environment free of unnecessary restraints.

Respect

  • Be treated as an individual, and with dignity and respect.
  • Have your culture, identity, beliefs and choices recognised and respected.
  • Receive treatment without discrimination as to race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or source of payment.

Partnership

  • Ask questions and be involved in open and honest communication.
  • Make decisions with your healthcare provider, to the extent that you choose, and you can include the people that you want in planning and decision-making.
  • Be informed of the name and position of the doctor who will oversee your care.
  • Know the names, positions, and functions of any staff involved in your care and refuse their treatment, examination, or observation.

Information

  • Receive complete information about your diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
  • Receive all the information you need to give informed consent for any proposed procedure or treatment. This information shall include the possible risks and benefits of the procedure or treatment.
  • Receive all the information you need to give informed consent for an order not to resuscitate. You also have the right to designate an individual to give this consent for you if you are too ill to do so.
  • Refuse treatment and be told what effect this may have on your health.
  • Refuse to take part in research. In deciding whether or not to participate, you have the right to a full explanation.

Privacy

  • Privacy and confidentiality of all information and records regarding your care.
  • Have your personal privacy respected.
  • Have information about you and your health kept secure and confidential.

Give feedback

  • Review your medical record after complying with current “Freedom of Information” legislation and obtain a copy of your medical record for which you will be charged a reasonable fee.
  • Receive an itemized bill and explanation of all charges.
  • Provide feedback or make a complaint without it affecting the way that you are treated.
  • Have your concerns addressed in a transparent and timely way, if you request it, a written response.
  • Share your experience and participate to improve the quality of care and health services.

What are Patient responsibilities?

When you are a patient of CRSA, it is your responsibility to:

  • Provide accurate and complete information about your past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, and other matters related to your health.
  • Comply with prescribed treatments, seeking clarification when in doubt.
  • Tell your physician or nurse if you do not understand your treatment.
  • Inform your physician or nurse if there is a change in your condition or if problems arise during your treatment.
  • Provide accurate information related to insurance or other sources of payment. Patients are responsible for assuring prompt payment of their bills. Tell us if you are having financial problems so that we may assist you in a timely manner.
  • Discuss with your healthcare professionals if you wish to refuse treatment.
  • Respect the dignity and rights of Be courteous and considerate of other patients, Visitors and CRSA staff.
  • Contact CRSA should you wish to postpone or cancel your schedule if you are unable to arrive at the scheduled time.
  • Respect CRSA property, policies, and regulations.
  • Direct any complaint to a staff member so that appropriate steps can be taken to address your concerns.
